Colours: Orange

We have already explored the colours red and green. Let's look at a colour, that sometimes carries a bad reputation among people: orange. We can find the colour orange only in the colour palettes of warm or neutral-warm colour types. Why? Well, because there is no cool version of the colour orange, i.e. it cannot be found on the cool end of the hue dimension of colour.

Cool colour types, especially Cool/True Winter and Cool/True Summer should stay miles away from the colour orange (it makes them look very unwell). Similarly, orange is problematic for Deep/Dark Winter, Bright/Clear Winter, Light Summer and Soft Summer. Only the Spring and Autumn Colour Types can pull off the colour orange and look great in it.

Let's look at the variety of shades of orange. Can you see what shades are bright, neutral or muted? What shades are light vs. deep in value? Do you have orange among the best colours for your Colour Type? Or are you one of those cool(er) Colour Types that should avoid orange light like a plague? Please let me know in the comments below.

The objective of this article is to increase readers’ sensibility to the 3 dimensions of colour (hue, value and chroma). The more you see the differences between the different shades of the same colour, the more selective you will become when choosing colours that flatter your complexion, your eyes, your lips and your hair colour. With each photograph, I will indicate the Colour Type (i.e. the code name for a specific combination of the 3 colour dimensions) the shade belongs to. The photographs are in no particular order.
