Lipstick Colours For The 12 Colour Types

Lipstick is every woman’s secret weapon. Any woman can wear a lipstick and look stunning wearing it. However, not every shade of lipstick will do her justice. Forget all that nonsense about “one shade suits them all”. What a misleading marketing tagline! There is no universal shade that would complement every skin tone equally. There is no lipstick colour that would flatter all the 12 Colour Types. It is simply mathematically impossible! (Perhaps there is a lipstick shade that has on average the least negative effect on the skin tone of women of a certain geographic area, however, that does not mean that such shade would be each and every woman’s optimal choice.)

What is the right shade of lipstick for you? The one that makes your eyes pop, the one that makes your teeth appear as white as possible (neither more yellow nor grey), the one that is a natural extension of your natural lip colour. The right shade of lipstick has the same colour properties (colour dimensions: hue, value and chroma) as your face.

Personal Colour Analysis is essential when it comes to makeup colours. The colours we put on our face are even more important than the colours we wear under it. I created a lipstick colour chart that illustrates the differences between the 12 Colour Types as well as the unique beauty of each Colour Type. I chose lipstick colours that perfectly represent each of the 12 Seasons.

Enjoy the chart! Maybe you get inspired when choosing your next lipstick ;-).

Notes:

  • The photograph has been taken on a white background during daylight. The photograph has not been edited.

  • Computer and smart-phone monitors and cameras distort colours. Every monitor shows colours differently. If you see the chart in person, it might differ from the way it appears on your computer screen. On computer screens colours tend to appear cooler. Using a blue-light screen protector or a night-shift might make the colours appear warmer.

  • The lipsticks in the chart are not the only option out there for the specific Colour Types. Each Colour Type has a number of suitable lipstick colours.

  • The chosen shades belong specifically to the Season they represent. Overlaps between Seasons are minimal.

  • The Dark (Deep) Autumn swatch a) looks darker on the photograph than in person; b) has been swatched generously in several layers which made the shade appear even more saturated. Having said that, it is a perfectly valid option for a Deep/Dark Autumn. It is a shade from the darker end of the lipstick colour options for Deep/Dark Autumn.

  • The Bright Spring and Bright Winter colours appear quite similar on the photograph. And rightfully so, both are bright and relatively neutral. But there is a difference that is more visible in person. The Bright Winter shade has a stronger blue base and is therefore cooler than the Bright Spring shade which is slightly warmer.

  • I have mixed two lipstick colours to create the Cool/True Winter swatch.

  • All the swatched lipsticks are owned by Style Identity.
